Sweden, with its long tradition of armed neutrality, produces most of its own air defense equipment. Excellent jets designed and built by the Saab company are matched with missiles from the U.S. and the U.K. to form the backbone of a high-performance air force. Current strengths are 15,000 men and 525 combat aircraft, and the new JAS39 Gripen multi-role aircraft will soon enter production.
